[beɪl], John, englischer Geistlicher und Dramatiker, * Cove (bei Dunwich, County Suffolk) 21. 11. 1495, ✝ Canterbury im November 1563; protestantischer Bischof von Ossory (Irland) und Domherr in Canterbury; verfasste eine Geschichte der englischen Schriftsteller, proreformatorische Polemiken und 21 dramatische Werke in Form des Mysterienspiels und der Moralität, von denen nur fünf erhalten sind.Als sein Hauptwerk gilt »King John« (1538), das als das erste englische Historiendrama angesehen wird.
