(1817-79)
Hungarian-born poet. His writing gave voice to the Hungarian people's struggle against the Austrian empire, and is filled with despair over the state of Jewry and the world. Although he was baptized in 1843 he continued to be haunted by the fate of the Jewish people. After the failure of the Hungarian uprising in 1848, he renounced his radical activities and made peace with the Austrian government.
