ELIEZER BEN HYRCANUS

(fl. 1st-2nd cent)

   Palestinian tanna. He was a pupil of Johanan ben Zakkai and teacher of Akiva. After the destruction of the Temple in 70, he was among the important scholars of the great bet din of Jabneh. Later he established an academy at Lydda. He was a member of a delegation to Rome led by the nasi to obtain concessions for the Jews. He also travelled to Antioch on behalf of the scholars.
