   Writer and merchant in Ams terdam. De Clercq was a member of the orthodox ProtestantReveil movement and a friend of the Romantic poets Willem Bilderdijk and Isaac da Costa. In 1824, he published a treatise on the influence of foreign literature on Dutch literature. A journal of his travels to St. Petersburg in 1816 was posthumously published in 1962, as was a small part of his extensive Dagboek [Journals] in 1869, edited by A. Pierson.
