   Abe Tomoji was a novelist, translator, and scholar from Okayama Prefecture. He attended Tokyo University where he studied tanka, English literature, Tolstoy and Anton Chekhov, and published his first novel, Kasei (Metamorphosis) in a campus magazine. Upon graduation, he taught English literature at Meiji and Tohoku universities. He subsequently published a novel titled Fuyu no yado (A Place to Winter, 1936) and many Japanese translations of English literature, including Moby-Dick, Treasure Island, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, and Wuthering Heights.
