Donald: translation

Donald m
Scottish and English: Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Domhnall, composed of the Old Celtic elements dubno world + val rule. The final -d of the Anglicized form derives partly from misinterpretation by Englishspeakers of the Gaelic devoiced sound (cf. DUGALD (SEE Dugald)), and partly from association with Germanic-origin names such as RONALD (SEE Ronald). This name is very much associated with clan Macdonald, the clan of the medieval Lords of the Isles. In the Highlands and Islands it now ranks second only to Iain (see IAN (SEE Ian)). Donald is now quite commonly also used in Britain and America by families with no Scottish connections.
Short form: Don.
Pet forms: Scottish: Donny, Donnie (Gaelic Donaidh); Dolly (Gaelic Dolaidh).
Feminine forms: Scottish Highland: Donalda, Donella; Donna(g), Dol(l)ag, Doileag, Dolina, Dolanna.
