Electronic Data Interchange

[Abk. EDI, dt. »elektronischer Datenaustausch«], Weiterentwicklung und Vereinfachung des EDIFACT-Standards für den Geschäftsdatenaustausch (B2B), der sich als zu umständlich und teuer erwiesen hat. Der neue, auch als Internet-EDI bezeichnete Standard nutzt das Internet als Transportmedium für sensible Geschäftsdaten. Er ist plattformunabhängig, erfordert nicht den Wechsel von einem Medium zu einem anderen und erlaubt so enorme Kosteneinsparungen. Die Datensicherheit ist durch Verschlüsselung gewährleistet.

In einer Variante, dem sog. Web-EDI, stellt Handelspartner A dem Partner B über einen Webserver HTML-Formulare zur Verfügung, die B für Bestellungen und Rechnungen nutzen kann. Daraus wird eine EDI(Fact)-Nachricht für das EDI-System von A generiert und dort weiterverarbeitet. Nachteil des Verfahrens ist (noch), dass Handelspartner B zwar keine Infrastruktur außer einem Internetzugang und einem Web-Browser benötigt, aber u. U. beim Datenverkehr mit einem weiteren Partner C andere Formulare verwenden muss. Zudem müssen Daten doppelt eingegeben werden, was zu Fehlern führen kann.

Weitere Erweiterungen von EDI sind durch die Einbeziehung des XML-Standards zu erwarten.
