Irish: Anglicized form of the Gaelic name Diarmaid. An earlier Gaelic form is Diarm(u)it. It occurs in the 7th-century Latin Life of St Columba as Diormitius. The derivation is uncertain, but it has been suggested that it is composed of the elements dí without + airmit injunction or airmait envy.
