Italian: characteristically southern Italian and especially Sicilian name. St Calogerus the Anchorite (d. c.486) lived as a hermit near Grigenti in Sicily, and is the subject of a local cult. The name is composed of the Greek elements kalos fair, good + gēras old age; in the Late Greek period it was used as a title of respect for anchorites and monks.
