   Modern name for a site in Middle Egypt on the east bank of the Nile near Hermopolis. The most important features of the area are the rock-cut tombsof the governors of the 15th nome of UpperEgyptfrom Dynasty 12, notably the tomb of Djehutihotep, which features a scene of the transport of a colossal seated statue from the quarry at Hatnub. The tombs were excavated and copied by expeditions of the Egypt Exploration Fund from 1891–1892, the Egyptian Antiquities Service in 1897 and from 1900–1902, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts in 1915 and 1990. The area has been investigated by a Belgian expedition since 2002.
