DAVID BEN SAMUEL HALEVI
(1586-1667)
Polish rabbi and halakhic authority. He was born in the Ukraine. He established his own bet midrash in Krakow, and later served as a rabbi in Posen and Ostrog, where he maintained a yeshivah. During the Chmielnicki pogroms (1648-9), he escaped to a fortress in Ulick. In 1654 he was appointed rabbi of Lwow. His Ture Zahav (Taz) is a commentary on the Shulhan Arukh.
