Drakula, Vampirfigur aus dem Roman »Dracula« (1897) von B. Stoker, danach Gestalt in Horrorfilmen, besonders von F. W. Murnau (»Nosferatu«, 1922) mit M. Schreck, dann T. Browning mit B. Lugosi (1931), T. Fisher mit C. Lee (1958), W. Herzog mit K. Kinski (»Nosferatu - Phantom der Nacht«, 1979), N.Jordan mit T. Cruise (»Interview mit einem Vampir«, 1994). Weibliche Varianten der Vampirfigur finden sich z. B. in C. Dreyers Film »Vampyr« (1932, nach der Erzählung »Carmilla« von J. S. Le Fanu, 1872). Parodistisch wurde das Vampirmotiv u. a. von R. Polanski behandelt (»Tanz der Vampire«, 1966). Historische Gestalten, an die die Vampirlegenden anknüpfen, sind die Hospodare der Walachei Vlad Dracul (* um 1400, ✝ 1447) und sein wegen seiner Grausamkeit berüchtigter Sohn Vlad Ţepeş (der »Pfähler«, * um 1430, ✝ 1476/77), die gegen die Türken kämpften. Historisches Vorbild des weiblichen Vampirs ist die ungarische Gräfin Elisabeth Báthory (✝ 1614). Vampire.

Although of English origin, the vampire thriller by John Balderston and Hamilton Dean based upon the Bram Stoker novel would continue to haunt the American stage for many years following its original Broadway debut, opening 5 October 1927 at the Fulton Theatre, with Bela Lugosi in the title role. Frank Langella* scored a major success in a lavish 1977 revival with scene designs by illustrator Edward Gorey.
