Zaandam: translation

   City founded at the sluices of the River Zaan, north of the IJ River near Amsterdam. The region was known for its timber in dustry (sawmills) and shipyards. At present, the city of about 72,500 inhabitants is part of the municipality of Zaanstad, with a population of around 140,000. The Russian tsar Peter the Great worked there for some months in 1697, and the Tsar Peter House is now a tourist at traction. The landscape, mills, and wooden houses of Zaandam at tracted many painters, among them Claude Monet in 1871.
