Welsh: apparently composed of the elements brân raven + (g)wen, feminine of gwyn white, fair, blessed, holy. Alternatively, it is possible that it is a variant of BRONWEN (SEE Bronwen). The story of Branwen, daughter of Llŷr, forms the second chapter or ‘branch’ of the Mabinogi: it tells of her beauty and of the conflict on her account between her brother Bran, King of the ‘Island of the Mighty’ (Britain), and her husband Matholwch, King of Ireland.
