BRUOCSELLA

   Bruocsella is the earliest known name of Brussels, which appeared in an 11th-century manuscript. The spelling appears variously in sources as Brosella and Brugsele. It denotes "bruoc" or marsh and "sella" or dwelling; hence, "settlement in the marsh."
