French: from Late Latin Dōnātiānus, a derivative of Dōnātus (see DONATO (SEE Donato)). The name was borne by various early saints, including a 4th-century bishop of Rheims who became the patron of Bruges when his relics were taken there in the 9th century. This was the given name of the Marquis de Sade (1740–1814).
