CHAMBERS OF RHETORIC

   Literary societies formed in many cities of France and the Netherlands in the 15th and 16th centuries by middle-class citizens who wanted to encourage the growth of poetry and drama. Few of them were innovative, but they organized public celebrations and encouraged development of both drama and poetry. In the Netherlands, they fostered the growth of a national vernacular literature.
