Commot: translation

English form of the Welsh cymyd, term for a division of land less than a *cantref. In the late 11c, Welsh commotes were areas under Norman control yet subject to Welsh law and custom. The commotes were west of Offa's Dyke and, in general, they represented recent Norman-English advances into Welsh territory. -
