Mainly Jewish: in the Bible a male name, derived from Hebrew adin slender. It is borne by a soldier in the army of King David, ‘Adina the son of Shiza the Reubenite, a captain of the Reubenites, and thirty with him’ (1 Chronicles 11: 42). In modern times it was revived as a male name among Zionists, but is now more commonly a female name, no doubt because of the characteristically feminine -a ending.
