   Modern name for the Egyptian Khent-Min, Greek Khemmis or Panopolis in the ninth Upper Egyptian nome. Little remains of the ancient city under the modern town. Akhmim is the home city of Ay. In 1981, colossal statues of Ramesses II and his daughter and Queen Meritamun were discovered there. Unsupervised excavations at the end of the 19th century led to the discovery of many textiles and textile fragments from the CopticPeriod. The nearby tombs of the Old Kingdom at el-Hawawish were copied and published by an Australian expedition from Macquarie University in 1979–1992.
