(1887-1975)
   American chemist of Polish origin. Born in Warsaw, he studied at the University of Leipzig. From 1911-17 he was at the Technische Hochschule in Karlsruhe, Germany, and later at the University of Munich. Subsequently he became director of the Institute for Physical Chemistry in Munich. After the victory of the Nazis, he emigrated to the US and in 1936 became professor of chemistry at the University of Michigan.
