Dell war einer der ersten Direktanbieter, der auch auf Betreuung seiner Kunden setzte, und wuchs zum heute weltweit größten Anbieter.Dell produziert an sechs Standorten in USA, Irland, Brasilien, Malaysia und China. Im Jahr 2000 wurde mit 38 000 Mitarbeitern ein Umsatz von 32,6 Mrd. US-Dollar erzielt.

Radikale Gesellschaftskritik, Rebellion gegen Konventionen und desillusionierte Skepsis finden sich in den meisten seiner Werke, z. B. in dem Roman »Moon-calf« (1920). Sein Humor kommt in dem Roman »An unmarried father« (1927; deutsch »Sein Vater, der Junggeselle«) zum Ausdruck.
