   Czech author. He was a member of the Prague circle of Max Brod and Franz Kafka. He lost his sight as a boy and therefore dictated his short stories. His Die hose Unschuld (1913) documents Jewish life in Bohemia against the background of the Czech nationalist struggle. His last novel, Das Volk des harten Schlafes (1937), portrays Jewish life in the early years of Nazi rule.
