Blaise: translation

Blaise m
French: the name (Latin Blasius, probably from blaesus lisping) of a saint popular throughout Europe in the Middle Ages but almost forgotten today. He was a bishop of Sebaste in Armenia, and was martyred in the early years of the 4th century; these bare facts were elaborated in a great number of legends that reached Europe from the East at the time of the Crusades. The name is rare in the English–speaking world; its modern popularity in France is partly due to the 17th–century French philosopher and mathematician Blaise Pascal.
Cognates: Italian: Biag(g)io. Spanish: Blas. Portuguese: Bras, Braz. Catalan: Blai. Provençal: Blasi. Polish: Blażej. Czech: Blažej. Russian: Vlas(i). Hungarian: Balázs.
