EGER, SOLOMON BEN AKIVA

(1786-1852)

   Polish rabbi and communal leader. He was born in Lissa and served as rabbi of Kalisz and Posen. He encouraged Jews to move away from commerce into farming, solicited contributions for Palestine, and campaigned for the emancipation of the Jews in his own country. He was an opponent of the Reform movement. He published notes on the Talmud and Isaac ben Jacob Alfasi's code.
