A established by in 1975 by the United States House of Representatives to oversee general national energy policy, public health, general interstate and foreign commerce, consumer affairs and consumer protection relating to the exploration, production, storage, supply, marketing, pricing and regulation of energy resources and development, and a host of other functions. The Energy and Commerce Committee is one of the oldest House committees.

The only other standing committees in the House that are as old or older than the Energy and Commerce Committee and have been in continual operation are the House Ways and Means Committee and the House Rules Committee.
