(1944-2007)
An Italian designer who studied architecture, Ferre designed belts while studying at college. He spent several years in India and the colors and craftsmanship he discovered there have been a significant influence on his work. He launched his first women's ready-to-wear collection in 1978, in part due to the backing of Bolognese industrialist Franco Mattioli. Known for his bold look and luxurious textiles, Ferre is also hailed as the creator of the white shirt. In 1989, Ferre was appointed creative director at Dior where he remained until 1996. Ferre has menswear, childrenswear, fragrances, and watches that bear his name.
