Italian: from the Latin family name Attilius, which is generally taken to be of Etruscan origin. The name was taken up in Italy during the Renaissance in honour of the Roman general Marcus Attilius Regulus (d. c.250 BC), who fought against Hamilcar during the First Punic War.
