   Russian violinist and teacher, of Hungarian origin. Born in Veszprem, Hungary, he studied at the Vienna Conservatory. He served as concertmaster at Düsseldorf from 1863-5, and then at Hamburg. In 1868 he became professor of violin at the Imperial Conservatory, St Petersburg. In 1894 he was knighted by Nicholas II. After the Revolution, he went to New York where he taught violin.
