CAMPHUYS, JOHANNES
(1634–1695)
Merchant. In 1653, Camphuys went to the Netherlands East Indies, where, from 1684 to 1691, he served as governor-general. He promoted scientific research and encouraged scholars such as Engelbert Kaempfer and Georg Eberhard Rumphius. Camphuys wrote a treatise on the Kingdom of Jakatra conquered by Jan Pietersz Coen, which was published by the historian of the Dutch East India Company, Francois Valentijn.
