   Australian jurist and legal scholar. Born in Melbourne, he served as vice-chancellor of the University of Queensland, and later as vice-chancellor of the New England University in New South Wales. In 1977 he became governor-general of Australia. He was appointed provost of Oriel College, Oxford in 1982. He published various studies of legal topics.
