Monosaccharide in which an OH-group is replaced with an amino group; often acetylated. Common examples are D-galactosamine, D-glucosamine, neuraminic acid, muramic acid. Amino sugars are important constituents of bacterial cell walls, some antibiotics, blood group substances, milk oligosaccharides, and chitin.
