Late Latin feminine diminutive form of Fabius (see FABIO (SEE Fabio)). St Fabiola (d. c.400) was a Roman widow who founded the first Western hospital, originally a hostel to accommodate the flood of pilgrims who flocked to Rome, but in which she tended the sick as well as accommodating the healthy.
