Leader of a revolt of the Batavi against the Roman occupiers in A.D. 69. The Batavians, Frisians, and some German tribes besieged the Roman army camp near Xanten, Germany. After the intervention of the Roman general Quintus Petillius Cerialis, the alliance of the Romans and the Bata vians was restored, according to the Roman historian Tacitus. In the young Republic of the Seven United Provinces, the historical revolt of the Batavian Gaius Julius Civilis was popular. Rembrandt drew from this subject for his famous painting The Oath of the Batavians.
