(EC 3.1.6.1) Aryl sulphatases A, B and C comprise a group of enzymes originally assayed by their ability to hydrolyze O-sulphate esters of aromatic substrates. Aryl sulphatase A, substrate cerebroside 3-sulphate, is deficient in metachromatic leukodystrophy. Aryl sulphatase B, substrate acetylhexosamine 4-sulphate in glycosaminoglycans, is deficient in Maroteaux-Lamy syndrome. Aryl sulphatase C hydrolyzes oestrogen sulphates. All three are deficient in multiple sulphatase deficiency.
