Russian: vernacular form of the learned name Evdokia, from the Greek name Eudokia (a compound of eu well, good + dokein to seem). This was Latinized as Eudocia. St Eudocia (98–117) was a Samaritan martyr beheaded by Trajan at Heliopolis in Syria.
