   On 25 and 26 February 1941, early in World War II, the illegal Communist Party called for a strike because of the harsh retaliatory measures of the GermanOccupation against the Jewishinhabitants of Amsterdam. The strike was a success; most of the city councilemployees and other workers and employees in Am sterdam and the surrounding area and in Utrechtresponded to the ap peal. The strike was severely repressed by the Germans. The victims are commemorated every year in Amsterdam, particularly at the statue of the Dokwerker(dike worker) in Jonas Daniel Meijer Square.
