BRACHVOGEL, EMIL
(1824-1878)
Playwright. Brachvogel was a trained sculptor who became a playwright by attending scores of plays in Berlin and witnessing the success of Charlotte Birch-Pfeif-fer and others who adapted novels for the stage. His first success was Narziss (Narcissus, 1857), based on a novel by Denis Diderot (1713-1784) titled Rameau's Nephew; it proved to be Brachvogel's most successful dramatic effort and was performed hundreds of times in scores of theaters in the second half of the 19th century.
