Russian: from the Greek name Arsenios ‘male, virile’. St Arsenius the Great (d. c.449) was a Roman deacon who served as tutor to Arcadius and Honorius, the sons of the Emperor Theodosius, who divided the Roman Empire between them. In later life Arsenius became a hermit.
