Director, producer, and screenwriter. Luc Besson is best known for his contribution to the cinéma du look. His first feature, Le Dernier Combat (1983), is a science-fiction film. His three films that are often associated with the cinéma du look—Subway (1985), Le Grand Bleu (1988), and Nikita (1990)—were nominated for César Awards for Best Film and Best Director. He later directed films in English using international actors. The Fifth Element (1997) won him a César for Best Director. His other English-language films include Léon (1994) and The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc (1999), which won the Lumière Award in 2000. His documentary, Atlantis, was released in 1991. He generally works with actor Jean Reno. He cofounded Les Films du Loup with Pierre Jolivert.
