Latin term indicating that a monastery had sufficient members to make it viable, that number being the apostolic 12. Fewer than 12 meant that the rule was unlikely to be adhered to and discipline would fall away. St Bernard was very conscious of this likelihood. 'Conventual' is the adjectival form of *'convent'.
