Abilene: translation

Abilene f
English (U.S.): a comparatively rare name. In the New Testament, Abilene is a region of the Holy Land (Luke 3: 1), whose name is of uncertain origin, but may be derived from a Hebrew element meaning ‘grass’. Several places in America have been named from this reference, notably a city in Kansas, which was the boyhood home of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Its adoption as a female given name was probably encouraged partly by its resemblance to ABBIE (SEE Abbie) and partly by the productive suffix of female names -lene (cf. e.g. CHARLENE (SEE Charlene)).
