Baeck, Leo: translation

(1873-1956)
   German rabbi and religious leader. He served as rabbi in Berlin, where he lectured on midrashic literature and homiletics at the Hochschule fur Wissenschaft des Judentums. From 1933 he was president of the Reichsvertretung or representative body of German Jews. He was deported to Theresienstadt in 1943. After the war, he settled in London where he served as chairman of the World Union for Progressive Judaism. He was visiting professor at the Hebrew Union College. His writings include The Essence of Judaism.
