(1838-1894)
Actor. The son of Eduard Devrient and trained for the stage by his father, Otto made his debut as a teenager in Karlsruhe while his father was that theater's director. Like his uncle Emil Devrient, he both acted in theater productions and sang opera. Devrient worked in a variety of leading venues during the 1860s, and by 1873 had become chief director at the Weimar Court Theater. In that auspicious locale he became nationally known for his portrayal of Mephisto in Johann Wolfgang Goethe's Faust. In 1884 he became director of the Oldenburg Court Theater and, under Count Botho von Hülsen, director of the Berlin Royal Theater; there he remained until his retirement. Otto Devrient was the father of Hans Devrient.
