Canzona: translation
Composition, modeled on the Parisian chanson, which was sometimes used as a prelude or verset in Christian liturgies in Italy and German-speaking countries. Canzonas range from mere transcriptions of French songs early in the 16th century to embellishments thereof to entirely original compositions late in the century. The latter are usually imitative, often marked by typical long-shortshort rhythms in the subject, played by a four-voiced instrumental consort or pipe organ.
