Estrild: translation

Estrild f
English (rare): from an Old English or Continental Germanic female personal name composed of the divine name Éastre (a goddess of spring, whose name lies behind modern English Easter) + the element hild battle. According to a legend narrated by Geoffrey of Monmouth, Estrildis was the name of a German princess who was captured and brought to England. She so enchanted King Locrine that he left his wife Gwendolen for her: in revenge, Gwendolen had both Estrildis and her daughter Sabrina thrown into the River Severn and drowned.
