Chagall, Marc: translation

(1887-1985)
   French artist of Russian origin. He was born in Vitebsk and studied in St Petersburg and Paris. In May 1914 he had a one-man show in Berlin. In 1917 he was appointed commissar for fine arts in Vitebsk and director of the Free Academy of Art. Later he became designer for the Chamber State Jewish Theatre. He settled in France in 1923, and emigrated to New York in 1941, but later returned to France. Eastern European Jewish life is a dominant theme of his work.
