Albee, einer der produktivsten und einflussreichsten amerikanischen Nachkriegsautoren, vom experimentellen Off-Broadway-Theater geprägt, wird häufig mit dem Theater des Absurden in Verbindung gebracht. Seine zentralen Themen sind Isolation, Unmöglichkeit von Kommunikation, Vergeblichkeit der Flucht in Illusionen.Seine Stücke üben scharfe Kritik am moralischen Verfall der amerikanischen Gesellschaft und an den falschen Werten der bürgerlichen Existenz. Albee ist ein Meister psychologischer Analyse und präziser Dialoge. Komödienhafte, groteske, humorvolle, satirische und grausame Elemente sind in dem komplexen Drama »Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf?« (1962; deutsch »Wer hat Angst vor Virginia Woolf?«) vereint, in dem das Ehepaar George und Martha verzweifelte Strategien verfolgt, um der Sinnlosigkeit seines Lebens und seiner Kultur zu entkommen. Es wurde ein Welterfolg.
