(1941- )
Director. Flimm in the 1980s became reminiscent of the theater artist in the early 20th century who gained bourgeois respectability, with work widely recognized and praised within the German theater establishment. In the latter part of the 20th century, his was one of the most recognizable cultural profiles anywhere in German-speaking Europe. Soon after completion of his theater history studies at the University of Cologne in 1968, Flimm began working as an assistant to Fritz Kortner at the Munich Kammerspiele. In 1973 he began working as a full-time director at the Mannheim National Theater, and in 1979 he returned to Cologne as intendant of the Schauspiel Köln. His reputation largely rests, however, on his extraordinary 15-year tenure as intendant of the Thalia Theater Hamburg, maintaining and in some instances restoring that institution's reputation as one of Germany's leading showplaces. Flimm began directing operas in 1978 with Luigi Nono's Al gran sole carico d'amore in Frankfurt am Main; he has since staged dozens of operas throughout Europe and the United States, most notably Richard Wagner's Ring Cycle in Bayreuth in 2000. In 2002 Flimm became director of the Salzburg Festival, and in 2005 he assumed directorship of the Ruhr Triennale. Flimm also has the distinction of an academic career, teaching regularly at universities and writing books, alongside his professional activity. He has held guest professorships at Harvard and at New York University in the United States and is professor of theater at the University of Hamburg. The recipient of the Konrad Wolf Prize from Berlin's Academy of the Arts and the Federal Service Cross from the German government, Flimm has also received honorary degrees from several universities in Germany.
