Spanish: from the Latin name Encratis or Encratia. This is derived from the Greek word enkratēs in control, temperate, moderate, but it has been influenced by Latin grātia grace. St Encratia (d. c.304) was martyred at Saragossa under Diocletian and is commemorated by the poet Prudentius.
